Fairness Sham

I got published today. My article was featured in The Echo Of India newspaper, it is about how Indians are obsessed with being fair. Not only Indians but many Asians use "skin whitening" creams containing bleaching agents that are harmful for skin. The advertisement of these products are done in way that says having a fair skin is a confidence booster and can get you a stature in life that you cannot attain by being dark. I believe this is just another form of racism, not to mention the utter foolishness of this whole idea that you can change your skin colour by rubbing a cream on your face.

How far can we go to change our self and to look the way society think is beautiful? I am all for taking care of my appearance but not at the cost of losing myself in this sham.

The definition of beauty is different for all as David Hume says "Beauty in things exists in the mind which contemplates them."  There will always be people whom you cannot please, but it is important to know you are beautiful inside out no matter what.

There is more to beauty than what meets the eyes.

  1. congratulations. you really wrote a terrific op-ed. first of all, i take note of what's allowed in an indian newspaper that simple would never be allowed in an american newspaper, and that is the level of criticism of an industry and basically mocking the creme as an honest product. i loved it, top to bottom. i like the way you think.

  3. Thank you Ed, means a lot to me that you love it.
And I never knew that about American newspapers..actually i thought it would be much easier to publish something like this in America..
I guess this is the benefit of living in a small island in India...I think the editors are looking for something fresh and bold..at the same time not many people read newspaper religiously..so you can actually publish a harsh bit of journalism and get away with it. But I had to keep in mind not to mention any product in particular or write anything that i cannot support with a valid evidence.

Thanks Sagittarian, glad you liked it and what a wonderful thing you said, true beauty does reside in people's heart. Sadly not many people recognize how beautiful they are just by being themselves.
